About Mikey Dunn

Thanks for checking out my official website! I’m a YouTube vlogger living in Brooklyn and posting videos about my life. I also work in Manhattan for Likeable Media, a social media marketing agency. Here’s a little more about myself:

Why ‘Mikey’ and not ‘Michael’ or ‘Mike?’

My name is Michael, but I insist on being called “Mikey.” Michael is used for formal settings, and “Mike” is my father. My full name is Michael Christopher Dunn, and my dad’s is Michael Kevin Dunn. Mom didn’t want me to be a junior. ^^;

Where’d you go to college?

I graduated from Ramapo College of New Jersey in December 2014 as part of the Class of 2015. (Grace Helbig was my commencement speaker!) I got my Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing and a minor in International Business.

What’s your ethnicity?

My mom immigrated to the U.S. from the Philippines years ago and met my dad at a country line-dancing club in New Jersey. Down my dad’s family tree you’ll find Irish-German heritage (Dunn is totally Irish) with a bunch of other things mixed in.

What countries have you visited?

I’ve visited family in the Philippines three times so far. Once when I was only 4-years-old, the second time when I was a junior in high school, and the third time in summer 2015 shortly after I graduated college. During the Spring Break of my sophomore year in college, I also had the opportunity to visit China. For those 7 days we visited Beijing and Shanghai, and it reassured my love to travel. In 2019, I took a Baltic Sea cruise with my family where we stopped in Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Russia, Finland, and Sweden.

Where are you from?

I’ve lived in New Jersey my whole life and we’re close to New York City, which is awesome. I started working full-time at Likeable Media (a social media marketing agency in Manhattan) in February 2015. Prior to that, I interned there for 13 months, so it was great timing. I still work at Likeable today as a Project Manager, and I recently moved to Brooklyn.

How’d you get into anime?

In the summer of 2013, my college friends were planning to go to an anime convention and wanted me to go. I told them that I wanted to get into anime but didn’t know where to start. They showed me Ouran High School Host Club, and the rest is history. Check out MyAnimeList for all of shows I’ve seen, my Tumblr for a bunch of anime trash and GIFs, and @MikeyDunnDesu for a good idea of what I’m watching and what fandoms I’m in.

Favorite anime?

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. The characters, story, music, tone, pacing, epic fight scenes… everything was just right.

Favorite anime character?

Makoto Tachibana from Free!, but he’s not real, which is depressing. He’s too sweet~

Do you read any manga?

I’m really bad at reading manga, but I did read Oyasumi Punpun from start to finish. Depressing for sure, but well worth it. As I read more manga, I’ll update MAL.

What kind of music do you listen to?

I really like pop music. It’s kind of embarrassing, but hey, so do a lot of people. I’ve been a Lady Gaga fan since her debut with “Just Dance” in 2008. I usually like most of what I hear on the radio, but now I mostly listen to j-pop and k-pop.

How’d you get into Kyary Pamyu Pamyu / Perfume?

Ever since I befriended my roommate Chris in college, a lot of my otaku-ness that isn’t anime-related has derived from him. Chris first discovered Yasutaka Nakata’s CAPSULE when he Googled “Japanese electronic music.” Since Nakata also produces Perfume and KPP, he started listening to them too. Since I was into that kind of music, Chris got me into Kyary first and then CAPSULE and then Perfume. It was great timing, as Kyary had her second concert in NYC and Perfume had their first in 2014. By transitive property (as we say), whatever music I got into I also got my brother Tristan into.

Do you play any instruments?

I played alto saxophone and piano in high school. Kinda on hiatus with those though.

What are your hobbies?

I make YouTube vlogs, love reading, watching anime (duh), eating food, and traveling.

Favorite video game of all time?

Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64. That was my first video game console, and we’ve been a loyal Nintendo family ever since.

Favorite movie?

Titanic. The movie came out in 1997, but I’m still in awe over the special effects.

Coke or Pepsi?

We’re a Coke family, but Pepsi’s fine. If you’ve got RC Cola, that’s cool too and that gets you bonus points.

Starbucks or Dunkin’?

#TEAMSBUX. I’ve been a Gold Card member for years. DD’s fine once in a while I guess.

Mac or PC?

I had a Dell Inspiron laptop up until high school, but it caught a virus that fried its hard drive and I lost everything. Then I switched to Mac, but I do know how to use both!

Favorite color?

Red (yay Target), but blue’s a close second and I feel like I use it more for things.

Cat or Dog person?

I’m a cat-person ^^. We’ve never had a dog, so I’m super awkward around them.

Favorite font?

Helvetica. Death to Arial.
